BASECAMP ECO-RESORTS
BUILDING ECO-RESORTS ONE STEP AT A TIME
BASECAMP ECO-RESORTS
Our building pillars
Basecamp has a big heart for nature and works from an important mission: offering the most sustainable alternative to regular holiday parks and resorts.
We keep developing and inspiring our guests who connect with us and visit for the same reasons.
We develop places into eco-resorts around a few key pillars.
We strive to minimise our footprint, restore damaged ecosystems in the local environment, and work as much as possible with local partners and staff.
- ENERGY - Generation and storage of electricity, with a net surplus.
- WATER - Systems that collect and (re)use water
- CIRCULARITY - Recycling and upcycling used materials
- NATURE RESTORATION - Connecting guests to nature, restoring damaged ecosystems.
- FOOD & DRINKS - Growing our own food and serving healthy, local products
- NO HARM, LESS WASTE - Choose consumables with a minimal footprint
- SOCIETY - Working with local suppliers and hiring local teams, paying fair wages
- HEALTH - Events and facilities support mental and physical health
Holiday homes built from sustainable materials
Each resort features tiny houses and holiday homes built from sustainable, natural materials. We collaborate with manufacturers who innovate by constructing energy-neutral, eco-friendly homes.
Most are gas-free, well insulated, equipped with solar panels, water-saving measures, and use SmartGrid for energy storage.
Together with our partners, we continuously learn about material quality and environmental solutions, quickly comparing applications to enhance them. We view Basecamp as a ‘living lab’ where each house and resort contributes to our goals. We actively share knowledge between our eco-resorts to implement best practices.
On the inside
By purchasing sustainably, small changes ultimately turn into big savings, especially with the international expansion of our eco-resorts in mind.
We carefully select our cleaning and consumables suppliers to minimise unnecessary chemical use and plastic waste. For example, The Good Roll not only provides 100% recycled toilet paper, but also donates 50% of its net profit to building toilets in Africa.
Upcycled and plastic-free
We love natural looks and like to be creative with the materials we have. Together with sustainable interior design partners, we ensure that materials are reused as much as possible and we upcycle old materials to create new things.
In addition, we are working on a transition to a plastic-free environment, by replacing inventory where necessary with nature-friendly properties such as FSC-certified wood and stainless steel. We work together with sustainable brands such as Dille & Kamille , Coco-Mat and Urban Nature Culture to furnish the houses .
Energy neutral resorts
The aim is to make the resorts as energy self-sufficient as possible. We ensure that all roofs are equipped with solar panels, linked to a hybrid network that stores surplus energy. For example, our event hall in IJmuiden aan Zee, called “De Refter”, has 140 390 Wp of solar panels on the roof.
In addition, we plan to build a wind farm, and we have already tested a silent wind turbine.
Transportation
We encourage our guests to use sustainable transport as much as possible by offering electric means of transport on location. In the Netherlands we work together with e-bike and bicycle supplier, MyHotelBike, to make guests aware of the bicycle as an alternative means of transport.
Organic food & drinks
Basecamp harmonizes with nature, planning greenhouses, food forests, and permaculture for all resorts. Our IJmuiden flagship features a greenhouse of recycled glass where a gardening expert grows rare and forgotten vegetables, integrated into our menus. At season’s end, leftover harvests are sold at a farmers market or used in a no-food-waste dinner for guests.
Compost
Food and garden waste at Basecamp are turned into compost for our gardens and greenhouses. Guests use normal toilets in Tiny Houses, but compost toilets outdoors inspire eco-friendly habits. This saves water, and the feces is composted to fertilize the garden.
The people who make Basecamp
Basecamp is founded and managed by a team of impact driven entrepreneurs, engineers, sustainability-, hospitality- and travel experts.
Together we strongly believe in our mission that eco-tourism can be both climate positive and profitable. Every member of the team joins the passion to make the world a slightly better place, and regardless of job title, we all enjoy rolling up our sleeves.
There are no men in suits, but imagine our CEO digging holes or putting cables in the ground.
