The elegant African Paradise Flycatcher is his favourite bird, and he loves witnessing clever tricks by two different species as they compete for food. Bonie ensures every guest feels connected to the environment and to the experience.
Meet Boniface “Bonie”, a passionate local naturalist from Dar es Salaam. Trained in Tourism Management at Dalai Star Training College, with a strong focus on birdwatching, Bonie gained early experience in the wilds of Selous Game Reserve before becoming a dedicated guide with Mafia Island Walking Safaris in 2018. Bonie brings nature to life through his sharp eye, storytelling, and deep love for wildlife.

Plan your birding season
Mafia Island offers year-round birding, but the migratory season (October–April) brings species like the Crab-plover, Little Stint, and a host of Palearctic migrants. Here’s what to expect month by month.
Best for migratory species: October–March. Crab-plover arrives September, departs April. Palearctic waders peak November–February.
Best for photography: January–February (clear skies, excellent light). June–September for breeding residents.
Resident species year-round: Goliath Heron, Livingstone’s Turaco, African Fish Eagle, Bearded Scrub Robin, sunbirds, bee-eaters, rollers.
THE MAFIA ISLAND MARINE PARK (MIMP)

The Marine Park covers 822 sq km and includes several coral islets surrounding the main island of Mafia, a true natural wonder and one of the top diving destinations in Tanzania.
Basecamp Mafia is uniquely situated within the Marine Park & Reserve. A mandatory Park Fee of USD 23.60 per person per night is payable directly at the entrance gate (Visa or Mastercard accepted). This contribution plays a vital role in preserving our extraordinary marine environment.
The waters of the Marine Park are home to vibrant coral reefs (about 48 species), extensive submarine meadows, over 400 species of fish, dolphins, sea turtles, and the dugong, a rare marine mammal. The Marine Park comprises the archipelago’s three largest islands: Chole, Juani, and Jibondo, along with other smaller coral islets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mafia Island is a very safe, low-crime destination. The resort is located within the protected Marine Park. We maintain first-aid facilities on-site and have established medical evacuation protocols. Current travel advisories for Tanzania are available from your government’s foreign affairs website. Tanzania requires no specific vaccinations for entry, but we recommend consulting your travel health provider about malaria prophylaxis and routine vaccinations.
Binoculars (essential), lightweight long-sleeved clothing in muted colours, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, and a camera with a zoom lens of 300mm+ for bird photography. We provide field guides and printed species checklists. A head torch is useful for evening bird walks.
Accommodation ranges from $100–$250 per night, depending on room type and season.
Guided birdwatching excursions are available as add-ons. Group discounts available for organised birding clubs.
