BASECAMP DEEP SEA FISHING
A world renowned deep sea fishing spot.
Fishing with the local fishermen on Mafia Island is a truly unforgettable experience that goes far beyond a typical fishing trip. You’ll step aboard traditional dhows or small fishing boats and learn age-old techniques passed down through generations, from handlines to nets, giving you a genuine insight into the island’s rich maritime heritage.
Mafia Island is often described as “famous” or “renowned” for deep-sea (or big game) fishing. It attracts sport fishing enthusiasts from around the globe due to its rich marine ecosystem and relatively untouched waters.
400 SPECIES OF FISH
56 FISH FAMILIES
48–50 GENERA OF CORALS
SIGNATURE SEASONAL SPECIES
Plan your top catches.
The waters around Mafia Island lie along deep channels in the Indian Ocean, which attract migratory predators. This makes it ideal for big game fishing and trolling offshore, the most common method used by sport fishers.
Anglers can catch a variety of fish, including snapper, kingfish, barracuda, grouper, emperor, and sometimes even tuna, depending on the season. The clarity of the Indian Ocean reefs also offers glimpses of reef fish and other marine life.
There is a high chance of catching large, trophy-sized fish, with some weighing over 50 kg. It is considered one of East Africa’s premier fishing destinations. It’s part of a broader marine tourism scene that includes diving and snorkelling.
PRESENT OCT-MARCH
BLACK & BLU MARLIN
- The top target for sport fishers.
- The biggest specimens are usually caught in these months.
DEC-MARCH
SAILFISH
- More abundant toward the later part of the season.
- Great for action-packed fishing days.
SEP-FEB
YELLOWFIN TUNA
- Very consistent during early and mid-season.
- Often caught in schools.
When we include Dorado (common and reliable from November to February) and Wahoo (known for fast strikes and often caught while trolling from October to January), the simple conclusion is that the best overall time to fish is between October and February. Avoid April and May for rougher seas, lower visibility and closed charters.
A Genuine Sense of Community
Engage with local fishermen.
What makes this experience even more special is the community connection: you’ll share the day with local fishermen, hear their stories, and often prepare your catch together on the beach, enjoying a freshly grilled meal with the ocean as your dining room. Trips at sunrise or sunset are magical, with golden light reflecting on the calm waters and the rhythm of the sea offering a serene, meditative environment.

The Marine Park covers 822 sq km and includes several coral islets surrounding the main island of Mafia, a true natural wonder and one of the top diving destinations in Tanzania.
Basecamp Mafia is uniquely situated within the Marine Park & Reserve. A mandatory Park Fee of USD 23.60 per person per night is payable directly at the entrance gate (Visa or Mastercard accepted). This contribution plays a vital role in preserving our extraordinary marine environment.
The waters of the Marine Park are home to vibrant coral reefs (about 48 species), extensive submarine meadows, over 400 species of fish, dolphins, sea turtles, and the dugong, a rare marine mammal. Frequently Asked Questions
Mafia Island is a very safe, low-crime destination. The resort is located within the protected Marine Park. We maintain first-aid facilities on-site and have established medical evacuation protocols. Current travel advisories for Tanzania are available from your government’s foreign affairs website. Tanzania requires no specific vaccinations for entry, but we recommend consulting your travel health provider about malaria prophylaxis and routine vaccinations.
Inside the Marine Park (key area for sport fishing):
Much of the core fishing zone around Chole Bay is part of the Mafia Island Marine Park, and here, there are formal regulations:
- Sport fishing requires a licence with is arranged by our watersports company;
- Catch-and-release is mandated for many fish, especially those below certain weights;
- The goal is explicitly stock conservation and reproduction
So in these protected waters, there is an official regulatory framework that enforces release practices, even if it’s not always phrased as a blanket “all fish must be released.”
Outside the Marine Park (offshore big game areas):
For offshore big game fishing (marlin, sailfish, tuna, etc.):
- Regulations are less uniformly prescriptive;
- However, catch-and-release is the standard practice;
- This is driven by:
- Conservation ethics,
- Tourism sustainability,
- International sport fishing norms.
We provide all necessary high-end tackle; you are welcome to bring your own specialised equipment.
Trolling is common for billfish, while specialised anglers can use popping and jigging on the reefs. Boats are usually equipped with Garmin GPS, sonar, and high-quality Shimano or Penn tackle.
