A four-minute walk for the fruit. A ten-minute walk for the vegetables.

The freshest thing on your plate might have been picked by you.

Ask where dinner came from at most hotels, and the honest answer is a supplier list nobody’s ever visited.

At Basecamp Amsterdam, the honest answer is: a four-minute walk one way, a ten-minute walk the other. The resort sits inside a genuine patchwork of working urban farms, and instead of competing with them, it simply pointed guests toward the gate.

The Fruittuin van West

Just around the corner, the Fruittuin van West was born from a simple idea — a place where the city meets nature. Guests can hand-pick seasonal fruit, collect fresh eggs, and let the kids loose in a play park with mazes, tree swings and, memorably, a mushroom cave. There’s a garden café for those who’d rather just sit with a slow coffee and a slice of cake, and an organic store for anyone who wants to cook their own seasonal meal back at their Tiny House that evening.

Stadsgroenteboeren: the city’s vegetable farmers

A little further on, on a modest patch of land, Stadsgroenteboeren grows more than sixty different vegetables and fifteen herbs for the local community, using bio-intensive techniques that favour the soil over the shortcut. The name behind the produce belongs to a small, genuinely international crew — gardeners, chefs, bakers, cheesemakers, scientists and food entrepreneurs from the Netherlands, Switzerland and Colombia — who’ll happily show visitors around on a tour and a tasting.

Why we didn’t build our own farm

It would have been simpler, in some ways, to fence off a plot and grow everything in-house. Basecamp chose the harder, more interesting version instead: lean on the people already doing this well, and let staying here mean supporting them directly, one basket of eggs or one bunch of herbs at a time. It’s a quieter kind of sustainability story — less about what the resort built, and more about who it chose to stand next to.

Next time you’re handed a plate at The Botanic, it’s worth asking how far the ingredients actually travelled. At Basecamp Amsterdam, the honest answer is barely any distance at all.
