Sea Sense works tirelessly to protect sea turtles along Tanzania’s 1,400 km of coastline, home to five of the world’s seven sea turtle species.

Green and hawksbill turtles return to the very beaches where they were born to lay their eggs, embarking on an extraordinary journey. But pollution, habitat loss, coastal development, and historical exploitation threaten their survival.

For more than 20 years, Sea Sense has partnered with coastal communities to safeguard these remarkable creatures. Local Conservation Officers act as ambassadors, patrolling beaches daily, monitoring nests, recording each clutch of eggs, and educating communities about the importance of marine conservation. Their dedication has protected over 6,800 nests and helped more than 528,000 hatchlings safely reach the Indian Ocean.

Sea Sense also invites visitors to experience this magical process up close. Between June and September, you can watch turtles crawl onto the beaches to lay their eggs, and roughly 55 days later, witness the hatchlings scramble from the sand toward the sea. A breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime sight. Ecotourism at key nesting sites, including Mafia and Kigamboni, generates income for local communities while inspiring a new generation of conservation advocates.
