No African dive destinations can match the complete marine wilderness experience. Off Tanzania’s mainland coast, Mafia combines beautiful hard- and soft-coral reefs with walls, channels, caves, drift dives, huge schools of tropical fish, and an extraordinary variety of smaller marine life. Tanzania’s tourism authorities describe Mafia as one of the country’s premier diving destinations, with more than 50 types of coral and 400 species of fish identified around the archipelago.
At the heart of the experience is Mafia Island Marine Park, established in 1995. Covering more than 800 km², the protected area encompasses coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and intertidal habitats, creating an unusually diverse marine ecosystem.
A diving variety that keeps you on your toes
One of Mafia’s greatest strengths is the sheer variety of underwater experiences. Sites such as Kinasi Pass offer exhilarating drift diving along walls and overhangs, where divers can encounter large schools of reef fish, barracuda, groupers and passing pelagics. Other sites showcase enormous coral formations and extensive hard- and soft-coral gardens. The result is a destination that works equally well for divers who love colourful reef scenery and those who want the excitement of larger marine life and current-driven dives.
The magnificent whale shark wow-factor
Mafia’s appeal goes far beyond traditional scuba diving. The island is famous for its seasonal aggregation of whale sharks—the largest fish in the world. During the season, generally from October through March, whale sharks can occur predictably around the island, giving visitors the opportunity to combine several days of exceptional scuba diving with unforgettable whale-shark snorkelling. Few African destinations offer such a powerful combination of reef diving and encounters with these magnificent giants.
On a personal note
Mafia’s most important advantage is its atmosphere. Compared with better-known destinations such as Zanzibar (outside the top 5 as number 6) and Egypt’s Red Sea (runner-up on the list), Mafia remains relatively undiscovered. Fewer visitors mean fewer divers underwater, allowing the island to retain a genuine feeling of wilderness and exploration. That sense of remoteness is increasingly valuable in a world where many famous dive sites can feel crowded.

The Egyptian Red Sea is one of Africa’s great diving destinations, famous for crystal-clear visibility, colourful coral reefs, dramatic walls, wrecks and abundant marine life. From the reefs around Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada to offshore sites and the legendary wrecks of the northern Red Sea, Egypt offers an enormous variety of diving experiences.

Mozambique’s long Indian Ocean coastline offers exceptional reef diving and encounters with some of the ocean’s largest animals. Destinations such as Tofo are particularly famous for manta ray and whale shark encounters, while other areas offer coral reefs, turtles, pelagic action, and spectacular tropical scenery.
